Meningitis is an inflammation that affects membranes (meninges) covering the spinal cord and the brain. Viral meningitis often poses a low risk of death while bacterial meningitis may result in relatively more severe conditions, resulting in almost half a million casualties annually as it can spread easily among people in close contact. In addition to viral and bacterial meningitis, neonatal meningitis, though being less prevalent, causes high mortality and high morbidity among newborns.
