STDs

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are caused by Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), which spread from one person to another by sexual contact. Some STIs can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

STDs can be caused by more than 30 different viruses, bacteria, or parasites. STIs have a direct impact on sexual and reproductive health, leading to infertility and cancers, and they can also increase the risk of HIV infection. Currently, 4 types of STDs are curable: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis.

Epidemiology

More than 1 million STIs are acquired every day worldwide. In 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 374 million new infections with 1 of 4 STIs: chlamydia (129 million), gonorrhea (82 million), syphilis (7.1 million), and trichomoniasis (156 million). It is estimated that more than 500 million people between the ages of 15 and 49 have a genital infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Prevention

When used correctly and consistently, protective barriers offer one of the most effective methods of protection against STIs, including HIV. However, while highly effective, these barriers do not entirely eliminate the risk of STDs. Safe and highly effective vaccines are available for 2 viral STIs: Hepatitis B and HPV.

Diagnosis

In cases of STDs, regular screening and early diagnosis are crucial. At Anatolia Geneworks, we offer a wide range of Bosphore STD Panel kits that can detect the most common STD-causing pathogens, including C. trachomatis, M. genitalium, N. gonorrhoeae, HSV-1, HSV-2, G. vaginalis, T. vaginalis, T. pallidum, U. parvum, U. urealyticum, S. agalactiae (Group B), M. hominis, and H. ducreyi.
